The Art of Joe Adams

Marine 01, 2018, oil on canvas, 30 x 30 inches.

JoeAdamsArt.com website is going to be updated early in 2020,
Looking forward to showing new work and new ideas!

Artist's Statement
Joe Adams explores nature based abstract constructs with unique gestural mark making.
Observations within our ocean's coastal tidal zone provide inspiration and focus.
Biomorphic entities evoking marine flora and fauna are rendered with geological textures and dramatic light.
Surrealistic environs exhibiting anthropogenic impact and the raw power of nature stand exposed.
At the soul of each drawing, painting, and sculpture is the profound essence of music and dance.

Combining science and art is creating a community dialog during a time of ecological crisis.
This dialog is igniting a collaborative process that supports vital environmental and educational issues.
Currently, Joe is on the board of directors for the Friends of Hopkins to create artworks, graphics and
to develop art and science exhibitions for Stanford University's Hopkins Marine Station.
Working with scientists and other artists to raise awareness and funding for projects like
The Strong Corals Initiative, implementing global coral reef restoration, is a driving force behind
Joe's upcoming new series of artworks and sculpture.

Project 1

"Sun Stone" Sculpture commission for Ventana Big Sur, an Alila Luxury Hotel in Big Sur, CA

Joe Adams sculpts 1600 Lb. limestone "Sunburst" that rotates on a concrete base within a Meditation Circle.
4 boulders are set on the cardinal directions and 8 redwood logs complete the circle or Medicine Wheel.
This project was completed in 18 days, 8 days before Ventana Big Sur was reopened 10-20-2017.
Enjoy this 2 1/2 minute production video showing each aspect of the project.

Project 2

Graphite Drawing Mural commission for lululemon athletica

This commission kicks off a new international initiative by lululemon athletica supporting local art
and interaction with local culture and community.
The mural is located in the new lululemon athletica retail store at the Del Monte Center, Monterey, CA.
Permanently mounted on wall and ceiling panels, the mural is 8 x 8 feet.
Completed in 17 hours, 3 days before the grand opening 10-20-2017. (See the 3 photos below.)

Project 3

Richard Rowland's "Plane Tree" Mural commission
for CMH-OHSU Knight Cancer Collaborative in Astoria, OR

Joe Adams assisted Richard Rowland, in part, on drawing the mural design, sculpture, mold making,
art production planning and helped cut and stack wood in 2016 and 2017. This is an 8 x 10 foot anagama kiln,
wood fired, ceramic sculptural tile mural - possibly, the largest and most complex produced to date.
This project took Richard a year and half to complete and a community of people helped.
Here is the process broken down into 5 parts:
1.) Richard's initial design, preparation and materials research.
2.) Production of the artwork.
3.) Gathering, cutting and stacking 30 cords of wood, 8 to 10 cords per firing.
4.) 1 kiln firing to test clay and technique and 2 kiln firings to provide duplicates of each tile.
5.) Mounting the sculptural ceramic tiles and mural installation.
(Production video and more info will be coming soon. See the 2 photos below.)
